On the drive down to Nauvoo last month, my mother-in-law had a big spool of white cotton yarn to make dishcloths and hot pads. We were listening to a book on tape and I was having a hard time paying any attention to it so I got out the yarn and asked if I could do something with it. I don’t remember the last time I knitted or crocheted, probably in young women’s making a leper bandage and I got like 6 inches- 1 foot into it and decided it was horribly boring. Well, I had 6 hours of nothing to do with my hands (and no one to talk to because they wanted to listen to the book) so I started doing rows with the knitting needles and then after a few practice rows my mother-in-law taught me how to add and subtract stitches to make a dishcloth. It was nearly done by the time we reached Nauvoo. Then I started making a hot pad. We didn’t really know the pattern so it’s not as thick as it’s suppose to be and looks very stripy, but the crochet stitch came back easily enough.
Well after feeling accomplished at actually making something, I decided I wanted to try some more stuff. My practice object was a scarf for Stephen:
I’m embarrassed to say that I barely knew what I was doing and made it WAY TOO long. It’s about 7 ft long. Oh well, it’s soft and Stephen can wrap it around himself numerous times. He’ll be getting it for Christmas.
Scarves are cool and all, I hope to make some cool ones, but what I really wanted to know how to do was make a hat. There are just some really cute hats you can buy that people have crocheted and so I’m determined to make something just as cute some day. However, I started with a small goal in mind: a newborn hat in white. It’s simple, it’s one stitch for the entire thing, it took me only a few hours (like 3).
I gave this to my friend, Erin, who’s sadly past due with her baby boy, but will be having him very soon!
Anyway, I’m proud of my craftiness. Now I just need to get moving on Samantha’s bedroom, and a few furniture rehabs I have in my mind (I just picked up the furniture at Goodwill).

Thanks again for the hat! After I talked to you, I became inspired and started my scarf. I finished it last night. Thanks for the extra push even if you didn't know you were doing it.
WOW! I'm impressed! I think Stephen will love it - and it will give him plenty reason to be dramatic :)
