Around the Smith house

We haven’t done anything spectacular really this month, but the girls continue to learn and grow.  Clara is now crawling and has proven to be a much more “get into everything” type of child.  So child proofing needs to happen and getting things picked up and put away needs to be much more of a priority (especially since EVERYTHING is going into her mouth).

A while ago I picked up the Fisher Price Little People Nativity.  It’s actually the fist nativity of mine.  You’ve gotta start somewhere right?  I had picked it up in October and finally pulled it out a couple weeks ago to give Samantha and Clara a “new toy” to get their attention.  I told Samantha that one of the people was Mary and the set came with a sheep so Samantha kept saying “this is Mary had a little lamb.”  So the next Family Home Evening we taught her the story of the birth of Jesus using the nativity.  I don’t know if we’ve connected it to Christmas, or if she knows what Christmas is.  I know she doesn’t know who Santa is, as I’ve never mentioned him.  Don’t kids just pick those things up?  Do I have to “teach” Samantha about a fake being? It seems so… counterproductive.  In these first two pictures Samantha and Clara are in their Christmas jammies that their Grandma Cox gave to them. Clara makes the funniest faces too.

(So another funny story about the little people nativity.  We had a baptism 2 weekends ago.  The next week I noticed at one point Samantha was playing with the people and she was going “Heavenly Father Jesus Christ Amen” and then tipping the person over (or donkey, camel whichever).  So she was “baptizing” her little people (no water).  It was kind of funny, hopefully not sacrilegious or anything.  We’ll have to have a family home evening lesson on baptism and who baptizes and when. :) )

At some point in time, Samantha determined her favorite snack is a carrot.  And not a baby carrot, but a BIG carrot… this last bag I bought has some really big carrots.  Samantha ate the entire 1 1/2 feet of the carrot.  Last week Samantha upgraded from her regular car seat to a booster seat (with a back).  The main reason for this was that Clara can’t fit into her infant carrier anymore (her head was hitting the canopy).  I put the car seats back in the car once I had Samantha’s old car seat fixed to fit Clara; when I came back in the house Samantha had taken the giant plastic bag from the box her booster seat came in and had it over her head and was tucking the ends under her feet.  I told her it was dangerous to have bags over your head and took it off of her.  I went and checked something on the computer and when I came back she was sitting in it while watching her Dinosaur Train.

My mother-in-law makes all of her grandchildren a baby quilt.  Making me pick out the fabric for Samantha was quite an ordeal as I had never dealt with quilts before and didn’t know what I liked.  I’ve become more in tune with my likes and dislikes of fabric (and quilt patterns) so Clara’s was tons easier.  I actually picked out the fabric when I was only around 20 weeks pregnant and had just found out that I’d be “most likely” having a girl.  Stephen’s younger sister had just had a little girl so I tagged along while she was picking out her fabric.  I happened to see this packet of fabric at the quilting store and mentioned that I liked it.  That was enough for my mother-in-law to buy it then, she has learned that I don’t express opinions very often or without some major duress on everyone else’s part. (I don’t do it on purpose, it takes me a while to formulate an opinion and before that opinion is formed I am completely uncaring about the topic…)  Well, now that my mother-in-law has been released from her duties in the temple she had time to finish basting and machine quilting this little beauty.  Stephen’s oldest sister, Shauna, finished with the binding just this last week.  The back is a thick (soft) chenille fabric which is absolutely perfect for the cold nights we’re having.

Samantha’s favorite toy is our Ipod Touch.  There are a couple movies uploaded on it as well as the Netflix app (we also have “educational” games and random other games she can play).  Some mornings, if it’s too early, I just hand her the iTouch and she watches Dora or Diego from Netflix until I get up.  She’s been able to unlock iphones since she was 1, and navigating them has always been easy for her.  Actually, one of her cousins got an itouch a little while ago (maybe a year) and she saw it charging on some dock; so she grabbed it, unlocked it and started playing Doodle Jump.  She shocked her 12 year old cousin.  Clara doesn’t seem to be too far behind in figuring it out, or wanting it.  Sometime Samantha will share and let Clara watch with her but once Clara starts grabbing Samantha holds it away…

Fortunately, Clara doesn’t get too upset and just crawls away to find something else to play with.
