I turned 26 this year. Stephen asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, listing off different activities like going out to eat with friends, a movie, or whatever. I’m not generally a huge crowd person and I’d had my fill from his birthday party a few days before so I said I wanted to do something WITH Stephen. I also had been wanting to finish some projects that have been sitting in an unfinished state around the house (which drives me absolutely insane). So Stephen got our niece to babysit for most of the day and we set off to have some DIY time.
The first project I had in mind was baseboard in the girls’ bedroom. We ripped apart, put back together, organized and painted their room before Clara was born. I hadn’t figured out what kind of baseboard I wanted and then after Clara was born I went into a perpetual low-energy state that is only now beginning to lift. (Newborns wipe me out… as does being a single mom) So we went and got baseboard and paint, and primed and painted. We actually still haven’t gotten it installed… maybe this weekend we’ll get back to it.
The other project I wanted to do was build a little picnic table for Samantha and Clara. I found the plans here. There are actually quite a few other plans on this website that I want to build (like bunk beds and possible a trundle for the girls), but I know I’ll need to do them myself if I want them in the next few years while Stephen is in school. I’m not scared of power tools, I can even weld if I have to, but I did want Stephen’s help in assembling and doing it right. So, I measured and cut all the pieces while Stephen did yard work and then he helped me assemble it. The girls loved it, and had (a very late dinner) on it. Maybe this weekend I’ll get to finishing it (woodfiller, primer, and paint) so that the rain doesn’t destroy it.

:) I like those kinds of Birthdays!
That picture of the two little girls sitting at the picnic table is too cute. I can barely stand it.
