Samantha’s birthday isn’t until next month, but I decided to have her party a bit early. It also happened to become the cutting off point for Stephen’s trip to Brazil and he was able to tell them that he HAD to be home on the 27th. They might have kept him there longer than the 11 days!
Samantha has been infatuated with Rapunzel since I randomly picked “Tangled” up at Costco when it came out. It was a totally random purchase (as most Costco purchases seem to be… tricky Costco) but she absolutely LOVED it, and I don’t mind it either. So to start out her party I researched… a lot. I found all sorts of stuff online about doing a Rapunzel/Tangled Birthday party. The best resources was the Disney craft website and a blog So I gathered my resources and came up with a party for 4 year olds (and a couple 5 year olds)
The invitation: Rapunzel’s tower. Samantha decorated them
A banner. Yes, I xacto knifed those letters out of cardstock. I printed out the sun flags from the blog.
And the crowning glory: The cake.
The base is cake covered in marshmallow fondant, the tower is all rice krispie treats with a piece of pvc acting as the center support. I had to add some roof support with a disc of cardboard. Otherwise, everything is edible (aside from the characters… can you spot Pascal?)
The day of the party I asked my niece, Lucy, to help me. She played with Samantha while I cleaned the house and helped the kids with the different crafts during the party. I’m so grateful for her help, especially since Stephen got home from the airport at 1:30 and the party started at 2:30. Just enough time for him to mow (part of) the lawn and set up the table and chairs. He was also designated photographer so that I could run the show.
We had the kids color first. I thought it’d be a super quick activity, but they were very much into it and I had to take everything away in order to move on to the actual activities!
While I was brainstorming everything, I decided to sort of follow along with the movie. So first everyone needed to meet Pascal! There’s a great little craft to make a Pascal Party Blower. We used HUGE wiggly eyes and some pink blowouts from the “baby girl’s first birthday”
Next, we met Flynn Rider and hit him with a Frying Pan. I traced the “Wanted” poster from my TV. We I decided that the target would be Flynn’s nose. I didn’t tie the scarf tight enough around Samantha and she peaked out the bottom and put it on his nose. She said “I wanted to put it on his nose!” She went again, blind. :) Jade didn’t want her eyes covered so she hit his forehead, and Kellen literally threw the frying pan… it didn’t get too far. Mehrsa ended up being the winner.
Then, we traveled to the Snuggly Duckling to get something to eat. Fortunately we didn’t run into any thugs or ruffians. I had decided to do the party in the afternoon so we just had some snacks (fruits, veggies, raisins, and orange boats on blue jello)
The kids played after they ate (or they just kept eating…) I was going to do musical chairs but decided against it and let the kids do what they do best: play!
but then it was time for our last activity: Lanterns! I had thought of many ways to do this, but decided on doing paper lanterns. Each child got their own watercolors and an electric tea light to set their lantern on. I pre-folded the paper so they just had to glue the edge at home when the paint dried. It was entertaining to watch the different personalities paint. Some just mixed all the colors, some would forget to dip their brush in the water or paint.
Everyone at the party including the helpers: Mehrsa (4), Madison (5), Jane (5), Olivia (8), Lucy (12), Samantha, Jade (3), Felix (4), Kellen (4)
We sang, Samantha blew out the candles (just in time too… as her cousin Kellen was very anxious to help her), had cake and opened presents. All the kids enjoyed themselves and I even heard one or two kids say “This is a fun party”. I’m glad all my work paid off and everything ran so smoothly. I’m also glad I cut down on some of my ideas (yes, I was going to build a tower with a head cut-out with a braid falling down…) After it all… we ordered pizza for dinner and I crashed. You may have noticed Samantha’s dress. Yes, I also sewed her a Rapunzel dress. She’s worn it every day (including to church) since I finished it.
